Goris State University is the only public Higher Education Institution of the Southern part of the Republic of Armenia. It was founded by the Armenian government in 1967, first as the branch of the State Pedagogical University after Khachatur Abovyan, then in 1985 as one of the branches of the State Engineering University of Armenia and in 2006 as “Goris State University” Non-Commercial Organization. The University wears the rich cultural values of middle aged century Armenian famous Tatev University and is considered the inheritor of it.
The university provides bachelor and master degree programs and since 2007 the education system is credit-transferrable. At present 12 specialties are offered by the University from which 8 are pedagogical and 3 are engineering specialties. The university offers 12 specialties for full time bachelor degree programs (Mathematics, Physics, Pharmacological Chemistry, Informatics and Computational technique, Biology, Economics and Management of Enterprises, Pedagogy and Methodics, History, Jurisprudence(pedagogical), Armenian language and Literature, Electronics and Power Engineering) and 9 specialties are offered as correspondence courses. The university graduate level provides 7 specialties as Master’s Degree programs
1500 students are studying at the full-time and distance learning departments of the University to obtain bachelor and master degrees. The university has the necessary facilities and faculty to provide students with a strong learning environment and produce high quality graduates. The university has computer rooms, laboratories, professional sectors, a reading hall, a separate library, a students’ canteen, and dormitory building. The dormitory building was founded in 1979 and provides reconstructed apartments to about 50 students. For excellent study the University provides university scholarship for all faculty students. Besides University scholarship the following funds provide scholarships for excellent study and for unsecured family students ( “Barepasht serund” Fund, Scholarship on the memory of Aksel Bakunts, American University Trpanjean family fund).
Unlimited internet connection and modern equipment are available in all facilities at the University.
Recently the international relations of the university became wider and new and qualified cooperation was formed with many international organizations and scientific research institutes. The university has experience in working with international organizations such as IREX/ Internet Access and Training program, GTZ reconstruction programs, UN World food program, World Vision Armenia, and the Engineering Information Foundation Electronic library program. These projects contributed to creation of computer centres, electronic library and reconstruction of some facilities at the university. Since 1984 international conferences have been periodically held, with the purpose of exchanging scientific information with other researchers. This year with Moscow State University, National Academy of Armenia, Institute of Mechanics and Karabax State University, Goris State University is organizing its VII International conference devoted to Mechanics from September 20 to 24.The papers of the conferences are published not only in University scientific journals but also in well-known international journals. The university has electronic library where more than 600 engineering books are stored on the basis of which the creation of an online database for Pedagogical specialties is being considered.
Goris state University is participating in international programs such as DAAD, TEMPUS, as well as French embassy programs which will enable it to exchange specialists and students, to develop the management system of the university, to improve teaching quality assurance mechanism and to develop scientific research.
Alongside to the university operates an Armenian-scientific centre where by the efforts of graduate students and professors the historical and cultural values of the region are being studied.
